Python pathlib reference: distinguish a path name from validated file content

Operation contract

The fixture creates an owned temporary directory, writes one UTF-8 report and reads it back with an explicit encoding. The suffix and basename describe a path spelling, not the bytes stored at that path. The read is limited to this owned fixture; opening arbitrary names from a request would need directory containment, symlink and race policies.

Failure and ownership boundary

A path does not become safe because it has a .txt suffix. Replacing a visible report atomically requires staging, validation and a suitable filesystem publication step. Costs and limits

Writing and reading n bytes take O(n) I/O and text allocation. The temporary directory owns cleanup after the with block. This example does not claim crash durability or safe access to untrusted paths.

Common Mistakes

• A familiar suffix does not validate content or source.
• A temporary directory is not a replacement for a publication protocol.
