Spring Cloud release trains: pin the framework set before adding a starter

A Spring Cloud release train selects a compatible set of Cloud modules; a Boot parent alone does not manage that set.

Choose one version boundary

The source kit uses Spring Boot 4.0.8 but does not import a Spring Cloud BOM. For a separate Cloud application, select a Cloud release train that explicitly supports the chosen Boot line, import its BOM, and resolve the effective dependency tree before running an application context. The Cloud Gateway 5.0 line targets Boot 4 and Framework 7, but that observation does not prove every starter in a mixed dependency tree is compatible. Boot configuration cannot repair a binary mismatch.

Make an upgrade reproducible

Keep a dependency lock or resolved tree with the release artifact, then run context-start, HTTP and rollback tests against the exact build. Upgrade Boot and Cloud together as a planned change. A green compilation is insufficient: auto-configuration conditions and transitive codecs can fail only when the context starts. Startup checks catch the final assembled graph.

Boundary sketch

xml
<dependencyManagement>
  <dependencies>
    <dependency>
      <groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
      <artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
      <version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
      <type>pom</type><scope>import</scope>
    </dependency>
  </dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>

Cost and verification

A BOM adds no request-time work. Its cost is release coordination and repeatable integration testing across managed dependencies. This sketch is not executed by the current Spring source kit; verify it against the chosen dependencies and deployment.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not copy a Cloud version from an unrelated Boot generation.
  • Do not treat dependency resolution as proof that the application starts.
  • Do not import the BOM into the published source kit until a real Cloud module and its tests need it.
