Before making a change
Start from a project state you can restore. Write down the expected behavior and identify the files involved.
Ask for a focused change
Fix [specific behavior] in [relevant files].
Preserve [existing behavior].
Explain the cause, make the smallest useful change,
and verify it with the project's relevant checks.
Report what was tested and what remains uncertain.
Check the work
Read the changed lines. Exercise the original failure and a normal case. Look for unrelated edits, missing error handling and incorrect assumptions. Use the project's existing checks where relevant.
Exercise
Change a small function to handle an empty input. Record the before-and-after result and explain why the change works.
